David Kasaija made his Uganda premier league debut for Kitara FC last Friday in a 2-2 draw with URA, more than a season since joining the club from Victorious football academy in Hoima.

The youthful defender started playing competitive football for the Royals last season while in the second tier, FUFA Big league. He joined them in the 2020/21 season but was not registered to play  that term.

This season, Kasaija has been on the substitutes list for the opening six matches until head coach Brian Ssenyondo handed him an opportunity to start against the tax collectors away at the Metha stadium.

He replaced the injured Benjamin Nyakoojo, partnering Ibrahim Magandaazi in the heart of defence and played the whole 90 minutes.

Ssenyondo described the defender’s performance as a ‘determined’ one after the game.

‘ I’m impressed by his game; it was his first in the top flight but Kasaija was bold and fought for everything on the pitch. We hope he continues to grow stronger and confident as the season progresses further,” the gaffer stated.

Kasaija was delighted to have finally played his maiden league game as he aims to progress in subsequent matches.

“It was my debut and overall I was happy and thank the coaching staff for trusting me. I think I really gave my all, plus the game was a good learning experience and hopefully as the season goes on, my overall performance will improve,” he said

Kitara led the game through Kabon Living at the half hour mark but the hosts levelled in the 42nd minute before coming back to lead early in the second half.

Despite trailing for most parts of the second half, Kasaija and company stayed composed and pushed their opponents further until Brian Aheebwa came off the bench and equalized at the death to ensure Kitara returns to Hoima with a point.

He added, ‘ I think they were good opponents who tried to challenge us physically but am proud of my teammates who remained resilient and fought as a unit to see that we left the pitch with something. It was a debut worth remembering.”

The Royals will return to action on November 26, with a visit to FUFA Technical center, Njeru to face BUL FC.
